Size & Fit Guide
Getting the right fit in your bowls clothing is just as important as finding the perfect set of bowls! When you're comfortable on the green, you can focus entirely on your game. This guide is here to help you measure yourself correctly and choose sizes with confidence, so you can look and feel your best for every end.
How to Measure Yourself
Taking a moment to get your measurements is the surest way to order the right size. All you need is a soft fabric tape measure. For the most accurate results, measure yourself over your undergarments, not over bulky clothes.
Chest/Bust
Stand relaxed and measure around the fullest part of your chest or bust, keeping the tape measure level under your arms and across your back.
Waist
Measure around your natural waistline. This is usually the narrowest part of your torso, roughly level with your belly button. Keep the tape comfortably snug, but not tight.
Hips
Standing with your feet together, measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom. Ensure the tape is level all the way around.
Inside Leg
Measure from the top of your inside leg at the crotch down to where you want your trousers to end. It can be easier to ask someone to help you with this one!
Sleeve Length
With your arm slightly bent, measure from the centre of the back of your neck, across your shoulder, and down to your wrist bone.
Fit Guidance for Bowls Clothing
Bowls clothing is designed for movement and comfort. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Polos & Tops: Consider how you like your tops to fit. A "regular fit" will be more tailored, while a "relaxed fit" offers more room. Remember you need to be able to stretch and swing your arm freely without the top feeling tight across your back or shoulders.
- Trousers, Shorts & Skirts: Look for fabrics with a bit of stretch for comfort when you're bending down. Pay attention to the "rise" (where the waistband sits) to ensure it’s comfortable for you.
- Waterproofs: This is my top tip! When buying waterproof jackets or trousers, always allow a little extra room. You'll be wearing them over your regular bowls clothing, so you need space for those layers underneath.
- Club Colours & Whites: When buying for your club, ensure the items match the required colours and styles. "Whites" can mean brilliant white or cream, so it's always best to check with your club secretary!
Size Conversions (General)
Sizes can and do vary between brands, but this general chart is a good starting point for converting UK chest/dress sizes to standard alpha sizes (S, M, L).
- Men's Tops (Chest in inches): Small (36-38"), Medium (39-41"), Large (42-44"), XL (45-47"), XXL (48-50")
- Women's Tops (UK Dress Size): XS (8), Small (10), Medium (12-14), Large (16), XL (18), XXL (20-22)
Always check the specific size chart on the product page if one is available, as this will give you the most accurate information for that particular item.
Footwear Fit Tips
A comfortable pair of flat-soled bowls shoes is an absolute essential.
- Length & Width: You should have about a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Your foot should feel secure but not squashed at the sides.
- Wear Your Usual Socks: Try on new shoes with the same type of socks you'd normally wear to play bowls.
- Breaking-In: While modern shoes are very comfortable from the start, it's always wise to wear them around the house for a few hours before their first big match.
Common Sizing Questions
1. What if I'm between sizes?
My advice is usually to go for the larger size, especially for tops and waterproofs. It’s better to have a little extra room for movement than to feel restricted.
2. Will my clothes shrink?
Most modern sportswear is designed to resist shrinking. However, always follow the care instructions on the label and wash at the recommended temperature to keep your kit in top condition.
3. Can I get trousers altered?
Yes, shortening the hem on bowls trousers is a very common and easy alteration for any local tailor to do if you find the standard leg length is too long.
4. What's the difference between unisex, men's, and women's fits?
A men's fit is typically straight through the body. A women's fit is often shaped at the waist and wider at the hips. A unisex fit is usually based on a men's straight cut, so women may prefer to size down for a more snug fit.
5. What if I order the wrong size?
