Lawn Bowls Size Guide

Of all the questions I've been asked over the last 30 years in the sport, "What size bowl should I get?" has to be the most common—and the most important! Getting the size and grip right is absolutely fundamental to your game. It’s the difference between a bowl that feels like a natural extension of your arm and one that you’re constantly fighting. Let's get you fitted for comfort and control!

Understanding Bowl Sizes

Lawn bowls are typically sized from 00 (the smallest) up to 5, with some manufacturers offering larger sizes. The key thing to remember is that the size number relates directly to the diameter of the bowl and should match the size of your hand. It has nothing to do with your height or strength! While sizes are mostly standard, you might notice very slight differences in the feel of a size 3 from one brand compared to another, which is why testing them is so important.

Quick Fit Tests

When you're in a shop holding a bowl, how do you know if it's the right one? Forget the guesswork! Here are the three simple tests I use with every customer.

Finger & Thumb Test

This is the classic method and your first port of call. Place the bowl in your bowling hand. Wrap your fingers around one side and your thumb around the other, bringing them towards each other over the top of the bowl. Ideally, the tips of your middle finger and thumb should just about touch, or have a very small gap between them. If they overlap a lot, the bowl is too small. If there’s a wide gap, it’s too big.

Controlled Swing & Release

Now, stand as if you are on the mat and gently swing the bowl by your side. It should feel completely secure in your hand without you having to clench your fist or strain your wrist. As you mimic your release, the bowl should leave your hand smoothly, without catching or slipping. If you feel you have to 'flick' your wrist to get it away, it’s likely too large.

Four-Bowl Repeatability

Pick up all four bowls from the set one after another, gripping each one as you would for a delivery. Can you comfortably get the same grip on all four? A bowl that feels fine for one delivery might feel strenuous after the third or fourth. This test checks for fatigue and ensures the size is comfortable for a full end.

Choosing Your Grip Fit

The grip is the textured part of the bowl that your fingers hold onto, and it's just as personal as the size.

  • Ring Grips: These are the most common style, featuring indented rings that offer a secure hold.
  • Dimple Grips: Instead of rings, these have a pattern of small dimples. Many players find this offers a fantastic, secure feel, especially those with smaller hands.
  • Deeper Channel Grips: Some models offer deeper or wider channels in their grips. These can be a brilliant choice for players who struggle with hand mobility or want maximum security in their grip.

The right one for you is the one that gives you the most confidence, whether you have sweaty hands in summer or dry hands in winter!

Hand Size, Strength & Mobility

It's vital to be realistic about your own physical comfort.

  • Juniors & Players with Smaller Hands: Don't be tempted to go for a larger size! A smaller bowl (like a 00 or 0) that you can control perfectly is far more effective than a larger one you struggle with.
  • Senior Players: Comfort is king! Many experienced players move down a size or to a standard weight bowl later in their careers. This reduces strain on the joints and makes the game more enjoyable. A deeper grip can also be a massive help if mobility is a concern.

Weight vs Size

For every size, you can usually choose between a Standard (or Medium) and a Heavy weight. A heavyweight bowl in a size 3 might feel more strenuous to hold than a standard-weight size 3. If you find a certain size is on the absolute limit of your comfort, trying it in a standard weight might just make it the perfect fit, reducing fatigue over a long match.

Indoor vs Outdoor Considerations

The surface can have a surprising impact on how a size feels. On very fast indoor carpets, some players find a slightly smaller bowl is easier to control and gives them a better touch. Outdoors, where you might be battling wind or rain, having a really secure grip or texture can give you the extra confidence you need.

Common Sizing Mistakes

I see these all the time! Try to avoid them.

  • Going Too Big, Too Soon: Buying a bowl to "grow into" is a mistake. It will hinder your development and could cause injury.
  • Ignoring Fatigue: A bowl might feel fine for a few minutes in the shop, but will it still feel good at the end of a two-hour match?
  • Changing Size Too Quickly: If you're thinking of changing, try borrowing a friend's set for a full game before you commit to buying.
  • Not Testing All Four Bowls: Ensure the set feels consistent. Small manufacturing tolerances can exist, so make sure all four bowls feel right.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What size bowl should a beginner choose?
The size that fits your hand comfortably right now. Use the fit tests! Don't worry about what size other people are using. Comfort equals control.

2. Can I use different sizes for indoor and outdoor?
Some players do, often opting for a slightly smaller bowl on fast indoor carpets for better touch. However, most players stick with the same size for consistency.

3. How do I know when to move up or down a size?
If your fingers and thumb overlap significantly on your current bowl, it might be time to try the next size up. If you're experiencing wrist or finger strain, or the bowl feels heavy, try a size down.

4. Do grips change the size I need?
No, the grip doesn't change the diameter of the bowl. However, a different grip style might make a size feel more or less secure in your hand, so it’s worth trying different grip types in the same size.

5. What if my hands are different sizes?
This is more common than you'd think! Always size for the hand you bowl with. Never compromise on its comfort.
