What to Wear for Lawn Bowls: Clothing,Footwear, and Club Dress Codes

One of the first questions I always get from new players is, "What on earth do I wear?" It's a great question! I’ve seen the dress code in bowls evolve so much over my 30 years in the sport. We've moved from a time when strict 'whites' were the only option to a more modern and colourful era. However, tradition still plays a huge part, and looking the part is a sign of respect for the game, your club, and your opponents.

Navigating the world of bowling attire can seem a bit confusing at first, with different rules for matches, roll-ups, and even different clubs. But don't you worry! It’s actually very simple once you know the basics. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to step onto the green feeling comfortable, confident, and correctly dressed for any occasion.

The Foundation: Understanding Dress Codes

The most important thing to remember is that almost every club has a dress code. This isn't to be difficult; it's about maintaining the standards and traditions of the sport. The rules generally fall into two categories.

Club Colours vs. Whites

  • Club Colours (or Greys): This is now the most common attire for everyday play, roll-ups, and many club matches. It typically consists of grey or black trousers/shorts/skirts and a white or club-branded coloured top. This move towards colours has been fantastic for the sport, adding a real splash of vibrancy to the greens!
  • Whites: The traditional and iconic look of lawn bowls. 'Whites' are often reserved for more formal occasions, such as the final stages of club competitions, national championships, or when representing your county. It almost always means a white top and white trousers/shorts/skirts.

Match vs. Practice Attire

  • For a Competitive Match: You will be expected to adhere strictly to the dress code specified for that competition. This is usually either full whites or a coordinated team kit of club colours. Always check beforehand!
  • For a Casual Roll-up (Practice): Most clubs are more relaxed for informal practice sessions. While you must always wear the correct footwear, 'greys' and a comfortable polo shirt are usually perfectly acceptable.

The Most Important Rule: Your Footwear!

If there is one non-negotiable rule in all of bowls, it’s about your shoes. This is all about protecting the most valuable asset the club has: the green!

  • The Golden Rule: You must wear flat-soled, heel-less shoes. Absolutely no trainers, sandals, or regular shoes are allowed on the green as their treads and heels will cause damage.
  • What to Look For: A good pair of purpose-made bowls shoes will be lightweight, comfortable, and breathable. They are designed to give you support during your delivery while being completely safe for the playing surface.
  • Getting the Right Fit: Remember you'll be on your feet for a couple of hours, so comfort is key. Make sure you have enough room to wiggle your toes, but not so much that your foot slides around. Trying them on with the type of socks you'd normally wear is a great tip!

Dressing for the Great British Weather: Layers are Your Best Friend

As any UK outdoor bowler knows, you can experience all four seasons in a single afternoon! Being prepared with the right layers is essential for staying comfortable and focused.

Keeping Warm and Dry

  • Waterproofs: A lightweight, breathable set of waterproof trousers and a jacket is an absolute must-have in your kit bag. Nothing is more miserable than being soaked through halfway through a match!
  • Thermals/Base Layers: On those chilly spring or autumn days, a thin thermal base layer under your polo shirt can make a world of difference, providing warmth without adding bulk that could restrict your swing.
  • Gilets and Fleeces: A smart fleece or gilet is a perfect outer layer for when it’s too cool for just a shirt but not cold enough for a full jacket.

Staying Cool and Protected

  • Sun Cream: An obvious one, but so often forgotten! You're exposed to the sun for long periods, so protecting your skin is vital.
  • Hats and Visors: A wide-brimmed hat or a visor is essential for keeping the sun out of your eyes and protecting you from sunburn.
  • Breathable Fabrics: Modern bowls clothing is often made from technical, moisture-wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from the body, keeping you cool and dry on hot days.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Attire

While the dress codes are often similar, the controlled environment of an indoor rink means your clothing choices are much simpler.

  • Indoors: You don’t need to worry about wind or rain! The temperature is stable, so you can usually get away with just your standard polo shirt and trousers. You can leave the bulky waterproofs at home.
  • Outdoors: Your kit bag needs to be a mobile wardrobe! You need to be ready for anything, from waterproofs and warm layers to sun hats and sunglasses.

Don't Forget the Accessories!

The right accessories complete your kit and add that extra layer of comfort and professionalism.

  • Gloves: A specialised bowls glove can provide extra warmth and grip in cold weather.
  • Towels: A small, absorbent towel is essential for drying your hands and your bowl, especially in wet conditions.
  • A Good Bag: A quality bowls bag or trolley is crucial for keeping all your clothing, shoes, and accessories organised and protected.

How to Check Your Club's Rules

If you're ever in doubt about what to wear, just ask!

  • Check the Noticeboard: Most clubs will have their dress code clearly displayed on the main noticeboard in the clubhouse.
  • Ask a Committee Member: The club secretary, captain, or any committee member will be more than happy to clarify the rules for you.
  • Look at Other Members: When you first join, a good tip is simply to see what the established members are wearing for roll-ups. It’s a great indicator of the club's general standard.

Dressing correctly for bowls is all part of the experience. It shows you respect the sport's traditions and your fellow players. By investing in a few key pieces of comfortable and appropriate attire, you can be sure you'll always be ready for any game, in any weather, feeling and looking your best!
