About Bowls in Spain
The history of lawn bowls in Spain is said to date right back to the 13th century when an ancient game known as ‘Bocce’ was played by the Romans and spread to the UK and throughout mainland Europe.
2013 was an important year on the bowls calendar as Alicante played host to the Ninth European Team Bowls Championships which ran for six days from September 29 to October 4.
A total of 16 countries took part in the event at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club. Spain came third in the overall team, while England took gold and Scotland silver. The Spanish team was made up of a mixed fours team of Pete Bonsor, Graham Cathcart, Lynn Greenland and Jan Dando. Greenland and Dando also won gold in the ladies’ pairs category.
It was an important day not only because of the results, but it was also announced that the director of lawn bowls in Spain, John Muldoon, had been elected to the post of Junior Vice President of the European Bowls Union.
