What is New Age Bowls?

New Age Bowls is a derivative of traditional bowls and is a fun introduction to the sport. The main difference is that it is a multi-surface game that can be played almost anywhere including in schools, community centres, leisure centres, offices, parks, courtyards, or at home (indoors, or on the lawn or patio).

What’s the Aim of the Game?

The sport is very similar to lawn or indoor bowls, although there are differing ways to play it. What is common is that the winner is the person, or team, who bowls closest to the jack, or target area. Just like in lawn bowls, all the bowls are manufactured with a bias – a weight differential – which makes the game trickier to play.

Who Invented It?

New Age Bowls was invented by the same person who dreamt up New Age Kurling – a British man called John Bennett.  It is popularly played in clubs, homes and schools across the UK and has been authorised by Bowls England and the English Indoor Bowls. Since its launch, word has grown on an international scale and New Age Bowls has been introduced in various educational establishments, some as far afield as Australia, South Africa and Canada.

How is the Game Played?

Players (singles, pairs or groups of four) take it in turns to deliver either a red or blue plastic foam ball near a yellow Jack or target area. Each player must deliver the ball when their foot is in contact with a delivery mat.  The game is won by the side with the highest point score, once all the bowls have been delivered.

What are the Benefits?

New Age Bowls is a universal game played by people with all abilities. It is a great learning exercise in schools as it involves team effort, co-ordination and point scoring. It also makes an ideal family game as it can be played by adults and children. Young children who take an interest in the sport may want to start with New Age Bowls, then go on to play lawn bowls or indoor bowls.
